The feeling at their home stadium was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had allowed 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Unraveling?
Was the team's progress falling apart, or did there exist any cohesion keeping it intact to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, but then he admitted that the management had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Rumours that he could resign were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic in their performances as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it has been hard to determine if they're getting better or collapsing.
Matteo's Unforeseen Comeback
One individual kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this year. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, Lazio were pushing for him to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. They were unable to thin their squad without replacements.
He joined initially when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."
Uncovering His Natural Fit
It's possible the coach was still trying to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
